The Wanderer Returns takes Its inspiration from the romantic 18th century painting 'The Wanderer Above the Sea of Clouds' by Caspar David Friedrich.
In both the original painting and in my interpretation, a traveller is depicted standing on a high mountain, looking across a sea of clouds to a vast landscape below. However, in my interpretation the wanderer is returning home. He stands with his dog upon a rocky precipice, gazing out at a vast, mist-shrouded landscape which teases all sorts of possibilities. Early on, when planning this piece, I chose to create a landscape as one of abstract grandness, suggesting the vagaries and ambivalence of life. Regarding the figure, the suggestion is that he is returning after a long period of absence, where his life has changed greatly. His position on the precipice, suggests confidence and success: he has ascended the highest peaks and now dominates the landscape. In front of him is descent, and the mists create a sense of uncertainty, shrouding his immediate future. Will his return be a success, will he be well met? However, he need not worry. He returns stronger than when he left, fully embodying the power that humans possess to overcome challenges and triumph over adversity.
